Beginning Farmer Intensive: Land, Law, and Transition | Penn State Extension

Friday March 8th, 2024 (6:00 PM – 9:00 PM) & Saturday March 9th, 2024 (8:00 AM – 2:00 PM)
Whether you need to find land on which to farm or are transitioning into an existing family or non-family farm business, many questions arise regarding legal business structures, business and retirement planning, as well as how to file taxes, among many other questions.
To find answers to these questions, join Penn State Extension, Penn State Law, and speakers from Horizon Farm Credit, Pennsylvania Farm Link, and The Center for Dairy Excellence for this overnight retreat for beginning farmers.
Specifically, this workshop is geared towards beginning farmers who have operated a farm business for ten years or less, beginning farmers transitioning into the ownership and/or management of an existing family farm business, and those considering starting a farm business.
You will learn how to locate farmland, the legal and business expertise needed to transfer land and farm assets efficiently, the different types of business structures and what might work best for your situation, how farm taxes are handled, and how to prepare for your own retirement while simultaneously starting or continuing an existing farm business.
This is an excellent opportunity to take a break from your current operation and converse with educators who can provide examples of best practices to start or sustain a profitable farm business.
The Beginning Farmer Intensive: Land, Law, and Transition will be held in Lancaster County at the Inn at Leola Village, 38 Deborah Dr., Leola, Pennsylvania 17540 and includes Friday night lodging and breakfast and lunch on Saturday.
This workshop is supported by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program.
