“Life in the Midst of War: The Civil War Colored Pencil Paintings of Amy Lindenberg”
CHAMBERSBURG, PA – The Council for the Arts of Chambersburg will present “Life in the Midst of War: The Civil War Colored Pencil Paintings of Amy Lindenberg” from June 20-August 15 at its 159 South Main Street location. The show will be on view Tuesday through Friday from 10 am – 2 pm, and at a meet-the-artist reception on Friday June 20 from 5-7 pm. For more information, call 717-264-6883.

“In 1996 I began to pursue my dream of combining my experience in depicting human expression and emotion, with my lifelong passion for the Civil War era,” explains Amy Lindenberger. “The culmination of my efforts can be seen in my large-scale colored pencil images which focus on the war’s effect on the citizen-soldier, his wife and children, and society as a whole.” Amy’s work depicts with great sensitivity the personal realities of the Civil War in the lives of both soldiers and civilians, and provides a wonderful complement to the battle scenes and high drama depicted by other Civil War artists.
Amy Lindenberger graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Akron (OH) with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing, and followed that with a 15-year career as a portrait artist, completing over 600 privately commissioned portraits between 1981 and 1996. In 1985 she opened The Linden Tree Fine Art Studio in North Canton, OH, offering drawing classes for all ages, and special focus workshops in drawing and colored pencil techniques. From 2004 to 2013, she owned and operated her Civil War Fine Art Gallery & Studio at 333 Baltimore St. in Gettysburg, PA, to showcase this body of work. She currently remains at that location as part of a six-artist co-op, The Drawing Room Gallery. Since 2005, Amy has also been a member of the faculty of the Botanical Art and Illustration Program at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh, PA, providing instruction in colored pencil techniques for use in botanical art.
In 1990, Amy became a charter member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, which now has over 1700 members in 16 countries. In 2002, Amy was awarded Signature status by the CPSA, and in July 2006 received her five-year merit award, for having had her work accepted into five of the Society’s international exhibitions. Additionally, in 2013 she was awarded Signature status by the Society in colored pencil/mixed media works. She has shown her work in a wide variety of local, regional and national exhibitions, receiving numerous awards. Her work has been included in six internationally-distributed books, The Best of Colored Pencil, Vols. I, II, and IV, Creative Colored Pencil Portraits, CPSA Signature Showcase, and CP Treasures I and II, and will appear in a seventh, Incite 2: Color Passions in Fall 2014. It was also featured in the Winter 2006 edition of American Artist Drawing magazine. Amy was the featured artist at the 2004 March to Destiny Civil War Encampment in Shippensburg, PA, and served as a lecturer at the Women’s History Symposium in Gettysburg in 2005.
